Paper title: Comparison of non-linear optlmlsatlon with genetic algorithmsin the case of i-beam optimal design according to eurocode 3
Authors: Krajnc A, Beg D
Summary: This paper compares three different methods for non-linear optimisation of steel I-beams designaccording to European pre-standard Eurocode 3. The first two methods are based on non-linearprogramming, which is briefly introduced. The third method - Genetic algorithms - is based onheuristics and is widely used in many practical optimisation problems. All three methods were used ontwo examples. The results show that all three methods give similar solutions. Non-linear programmingmethods outperform genetic algorithms when computational time is taken into account, but geneticalgorithms require much less coding and are able to locate global optimum better than non-linearprogramming methods.
