Paper title: Construction EDI in Australia some recent developments and current aims
Authors: Fellows A
Summary: The construction industry in Australia covers a very large number o€ organisations fromsmall suppliers and contractors to major consultants and government authorities. Theseare spread over a large geographical area and the works which they undertake range fromvery small to billions of dollars. There is a wide variation in technical sophistication withinthe industry. A 1992 survey of the use of electronic exchange of data between sections ofthe industry showed considerable interest, limited understanding, and little attempt atimplementation. The current economic downturn and the long term return on the firstcosts involved, limits enthusiasm. Difficulties with its adoption and steps to overcome theseare proposed with a timetable to the year 2OOO. This will be achieved only with governmentcommitment, a well defined industry plan, and dose ties with the international EDFACTbody of the United Nations.
