Paper title: The development of industry foundation classes for facilities management
Authors: Wix J, Yu K, Ottosen P S
Summary: The Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) are integrated object models ofbuilding projects developed by the International Alliance forInteroperability (IAI). The IFCs support data sharing and exchangebetween industry processes across multiple domains such as architecture, structural engineering, building services, construction and facilitiesmanagement (FM).Maintenance management is one of the major functionsin FM. It requires object information about building systems andcomponents that are generated from different domain processes throughoutdifferent stages of the project development life cycle. Supported by theIFCs, this information can remain available until the building operationphase for maintenance processes to use. However, this informationrequirement must be defined based on detailed analysis of maintenanceprocesses, and must be modeled using a formal modeling methodology, thatis, the IFCs.This paper describes the current and proposed developments infacilities management in the IAI, particularly for maintenance. It alsodiscusses a planning 'roadmap' that identifies discrete packages ofinformation that support FM processes. The paper demonstrates a generalmaintenance process model developed to define the object requirements andinterfaces for sharing maintenance information. Based on the processinformation analysis, the paper develops and presents a set of IFC objectmodels that support the maintenance processes. Additionally, this paperdiscusses the necessities and capabilities of the IFC maintenance objects toaccess and utilize external information provided by various libraryresources.
