Paper title: Properties of the virtual building
Authors: Christiansson P
Summary: The paper discusses properties of future digital Virtual Buildings from theclient, design, construction and operation and maintenance perspectives. Inthis context the author defines a Virtual Building as "a formalized digitaldescription of an existing or planned building which can be used to fullysimulate and communicate the behavior of the real building in its expectedcontexts".The paper focuses on: (1) requirements formulations of futureVirtual Building models, (2) the necessity and possibilities to buildredundant, overlapping descriptions of buildings and (3) why and howformal temporal building process properties may be included in thedescriptions. The author believes that it is not possible or desirable to createa single non-redundant model to represent a building from concept todemolition. In this discussion an account is also taken of the influences ofmeta level information models, dependencies between multimediapresentation and application model views, the introduction of platformindependentInternet-based solutions, and the IT-support tools in futureintelligent and responsive buildings.
